The notebook contains a membership list, minutes and by-laws, 1885-1886, of the Richmond District, Knights of Labor Building Association; minutes, 1895, of an attempt to reorganize; and minutes, 1897-98, of Local Union no. 1, Cooperative Commonwealth of Virginia, and its independent local successor the Socialist Educational Club of Virginia. Cooperation with the Socialist Labor Party, and the possibility of a socialist community are topics in the Brotherhood of the Cooperative Commonwealth of Virginia minutes which also contain the draft of a protest over the granting of franchises by the city of Richmond to private companies for public utilities. The collection also contains essays and a short story by John Taylor Chappell, and an article by Samuel Michael Chappell tracing the history from 1914 of government and business repression of U.S. democracy and individual rights, particularly those of socialists and union members. The 1922 strike of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks against the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad for which Chappell was fired and blacklisted is described.
